Outings
We go on a weekend outing for one to two nights/month. During the summer, the troop goes to Summer Camp for one week. High adventure trips last one to two weeks. Occasionally there are day trips.
Community
Our troop participates in and performs several annual community service projects, including Adopt-a-Road, Scouting for Food, Meals for the Homeless, Wreaths Across America, and much more.
Our Typical Year…
September
Summer recess retires, and Scouts begin wearing their Field Uniform the first Monday after Labor Day. Fall outings begin! The troop often participates in council’s orienteering competition.
November
We camps out at Camp Conewago, hikes and visits historic markers at Gettysburg, participate in Remembrance Day illumination honoring Civil War soldiers, enjoy local ice cream, and experience period food in a historic tavern.
January
Klondike and winter camping, such as Mardens Tract along the C & O, with a hiking tour of D.C. and an occasional tour of the White House.
March
Cold spring Webelos campout, where we integrate outdoor fun and Scout skills while hosting Webelos exploring our troop. Often we camp out at the Walkersville Watershed campground.
May
Summer recess unofficially begins, and so does the Activity Uniform. Boys who go to summer camp have a variety of activity shirts to choose from, but the default is red.
July
In July and August, the troop often spends time on a high adventure, camporee or jamboree, or summer camp. Summer camp typically runs the last week of July or 1st week of August, and is usually at Camp Horsehoe.
October
The beginning of our Poinsettia fundraiser. It is also when the Troop has its Halloween camp out, filled with ghost stories around the campfire and a visit or hike to a nearby cemetery with old graves.
December
Cabin camp out, at Troop 78’s cabin in Willistown, PA. We take to historic sites or museums at nearby Philadelphia. Evenings have games, movies, and night hikes, and Mr. Benedict’s smoked turkey, and a traditional ‘Thanksgiving style’ dinner favorite.
February
The troop often takes a ski trip and gives the boys the opportunity to earn skiing merit badge. February is also usually the month of the Scout Mass, where troops from the district attend and participate.
April
Road to first class camp out, usually at Patapsco State Park, where we rotate a lot of ‘stations’ and teach Scout skills required for the early ranks, including knots and lashings, utensil-less cooking, Totin’ chip, and more!
June
We often go on a canoeing or kayaking trip and camp out, near and around historic areas such as the C&O canal and Jugs Bay.
August
High adventures include activities like whitewater rafting or overnight backpacking, and of course the BSA high adventure camps Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, and the Summit.
