Every summer, Troop 883 goes to summer camp for a week. Traditionally, this begins the last Saturday in July, and at Camp Horseshoe, which straddles Maryland and PA, and is officially part of the Chester County Council. The troop stays in three-sided Adirondack shelters with bunks and mattresses and participates in a variety of programs and merit badges.

Adult Attendance

Troop 883 likes to send a minimum of four (4) adult leaders to summer camp – and will pay the cost of doing so.  (The theory is that, if two adults need to accompany a Scout to the hospital, there would always be two adults in camp – to comply with BSA Youth Protection guidelines.)  

Additional leaders and adults are welcome to go to summer camp, but they are expected to pay their own camp cost.

The Troop Committee established a “hierarchy” of who would get reimbursed to go to camp:

Scoutmaster
Assistant Scoutmasters
In the event there are more than three Assistant Scoutmasters who would like to attend summer camp (or four Assistant Scoutmasters in the event the Scoutmaster is not attending summer camp), the total cost of any additional adult leader registration costs will be divided by the Scoutmaster and Assistance Scoutmasters who are attending.
Example:  The Scoutmaster and five Assistant Scoutmasters attend summer camp.  The leader cost is $200 per leader.  The Troop commits to paying for the first four leaders, so the remaining balance is $400 (2 leaders x $200 = $400).  Each of the six leaders would then pay $66.67 for summer camp ($400 / 6 = $66.67).

Committee Chair
In the event there are fewer than four leaders (Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters) signed up for summer camp, the Troop will cover the cost of the Committee Chair to attend summer camp as a leader.

If there are four or more leaders (Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters) signed up to attend summer camp, the Troop will not subsidize the cost for the Committee Chair to attend summer camp.

Committee Members
In the event there are fewer than four leaders (Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Committee Chair) signed up for summer camp, the Troop will cover the cost of a Committee Member to attend summer camp as a leader.

If there are four or more leaders (Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, and/or Committee Chair) signed up to attend summer camp, the Troop will not subsidize the cost for a Committee Member to attend summer camp.

Unregistered Adults
The Troop will not subsidize the cost for an unregistered adult to attend summer camp.

In certain situations (for example, in the case of a special needs Scout), a leader or unregistered adult might attend summer camp with his or her son to support the Scout during camp.  Since the primary responsibility of this adult is to support a single Scout, the Troop will not count this leader or unregistered adult as a “leader” for summer camp.  In this situation, the Troop also will not subsidize the adult’s camp cost.

The Troop Committee can adjust the required number of adults attending summer camp.  As an example, if the number of Scouts attending summer camp is unusually small or unusually large, the Committee might increase or decrease the required number of adults who attend summer camp.
