Allocating Cost of Patches and Awards from Outings and Activities

From time-to-time, Scouts (and adults) will earn patches and/or awards through their participation in outings or activities.  Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • C&O Canal patches and rockers
  • Gettysburg Trail patches
  • High Adventure program patches
  • Religious emblem awards
    • Although the Troop will supply the “square knot” as an advancement item
  • Summer camp patches
    • Although the Troop will supply merit badges and other advancement items

Except as noted above, these patches and/or awards are not “advancement.”  In fact, the majority of the awards listed above are not BSA awards at all.

Instead of coding the cost of these patches and awards to the advancement account, the costs will be allocated to Scouts (and, when appropriate, adults) who earned the patches or awards.  Allocation will generally be handled through the outing spreadsheet that is completed shortly after the outing is completed.

Approved by the Troop Committee on October 17, 2016.
